What are the top 3 biggest challenges in blue-collar employment now?

  1. High competition - Everybody's fishing in the same pond
  2. Scarcity - There aren't enough fish in the pond.
  3. Skillsgap - Many traditional blue-collar roles now require new technical skills due to advances in technology and machinery.

What changes do you see in recruitment and labour market trends?

In the labor market, the most impactful trends are the rise of AI and robotics. AI is developing towards a level where it will be able to replace humans in most cognitive jobs. You can see this in recruitment, a cognitive function, which is becoming increasingly automated. Robotics are developing towards a level where they will be able to replace humans in most physical jobs. These trends will lead to far less demand for human labor and subsequently, far less demand for recruitment.

What challenges and opportunities do you see with the rise of automation?

As automation replaces humans in an increasing number of jobs, I see big socioeconomic challenges. How will people provide for themselves and their families? How will key social institutions be funded? The opportunity is to be a driver of automation, as those will be the last people to be replaced, or an investor in it.

What has been the biggest professional challenge for you so far?

Keeping up with the speed at which technological advancements are currently happening. The previous generation could learn a handful of skills and milk them throughout a successful career. Meanwhile, what we learn today could be meaningless in 5 years. Knowing this, I'm trying to keep up, but things are moving fast and they only seem to be accelerating. It's hard to keep up. It's also a lot of fun trying though.

What are the personal values and principles that you consider important in managing people and building a workplace culture?

I'm a firm believer in what Ken Blanchard describes as empowerment: giving employees the authority, resources, and support they need to make decisions and take actions that contribute to the organization's goals. Trusting each other to do it. Recognition and reward are also key. Properly celebrating wins. And last, but not least, consistent and open communication.
